Material Study

Bent

  • Adds variety, diffuses the light, quickly accomplished.

  • Hard to then manipulate again, although it provides variety, it does so in a messy fashion.

Broken

  • Adds variety, creates movement, adds a sense of fragility.

  • Time consuming, could be fragile, hard to manipulate further, limited diffusion of light.

Whole

  • Simply beautiful, adds depth, variety in diffusion, easy to manipulate further.

  • Fastening layers could prove difficult.

How might I reduce fasteners, and packaging?

Understanding the unique properties of Yupo led to me realize, the natural flexion of the material without being manipulated, has beauty and ease. Not only does it allow for reduced packaging, the user then uses their own agency to determine the outcome of the piece when assembling the layers.

  • Leaning into the innate properties of the yupo, the transparency of the layers adds shadow and variety to what you see.

  • The simplicity of putting the lamp together, begs the layers to be assembled as the user sees fit, when in one’s own space.

  • The way the layers are brought together by a small piece of wood is reminiscent of childhood play when attaching leaves to sticks in an effort to fulfill a playful imagination.

  • Shadows cast, the diffusion of light, the timelines of set up, the feeling it provides.

Iteration 01

Bia, refined.

Utilizing the natural flexion properties of yupo, in combination with multiple layers, Bia is a representation of force with strength and fragility.

Flat package is shipped.

In the box are three pieces of yupo, pre punched, a wooden stick and a cord.

Bia is assembled within one’s home.
